Adriana Sanchez is currently in her third year studying Veterinary Sciences at the University of Arizona. Adriana is from San Luis, Ariz., and is the first person in her family to attend college.
Thanks to the Gear Up Next Steps Scholarship, she is able to pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Although she misses home, she has built her own network and connections in Tucson. She does visit her family when she is able to as well.
Like most students, Adriana’s classes have pivoted online. It is hard to adjust to an online schedule of courses like Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Domestic Animal Behavior, when they are meant for hands-on learning. However, Adriana has not let this deter her from her academic goals and through hard work and dedication, she maintains a GPA of 3.5.
Her academics have been stellar, and she still makes time for her part-time job on campus as an access assistant for the locksmith. In addition, Adriana is an active member with the Pre-Vet Club on campus.
Coming into her junior year, Adriana was focused on finding a way to get field work experience. The odds were slim, as many animal clinics and veterinary offices could not take on volunteers or interns due to the on-going pandemic. She kept on trying and thanks to her persistence, Adriana recently landed an internship with TRAK, a nonprofit in Tucson that provides therapeutic animal interaction to the public. It has been a rewarding experience thus far and Adriana continue to learn more every day.
