Statement of Support: Proposition 208 (“Invest in Ed”)

September 23rd, 2020

A strong education system—one that extends from early learning through postsecondary attainment and enables all students to have opportunities to thrive and pursue their dreams—is essential to the health and prosperity of Arizona.

College Success Arizona is deeply invested in the future of our state and our young people, and has consistently advocated for increased education funding in Arizona. We have been active partners in collaborative efforts among education, business, and philanthropy leaders to explore and propose equitable and sustainable solutions to comprehensively increase education funding. In addition, we have championed the moral imperative of investing meaningfully in our students, educators, schools, and postsecondary institutions.

Proposition 208 would levy an extra tax on certain individuals to create new revenue focused narrowly on the K-12 system. It is crucial that early learning and postsecondary education are not ignored in any education funding strategy. They are both essential, not ancillary, to ensuring individual progress and economic prosperity. Furthermore, our statewide postsecondary attainment goal depends on significant improvements along the entire education continuum.

Proposition 208 will provide much-needed revenue for K-12 schools, teachers, and students. For this reason, College Success Arizona supports Invest in Ed and its promise to provide resources that will significantly strengthen education in our state.

A decade of deferring and missing opportunities to create a reliable and sustainable education funding stream has now left Arizona with limited options. Invest in Ed represents an important step toward building a stronger education system. Ultimately though, that system must serve all students and support teaching and learning in ways that increase attainment and prepare students for success in both K-12 and postsecondary education.

We know Proposition 208 is only one piece of the puzzle. Keeping that in mind, College Success Arizona will continue to advocate for systemic and sustained increased funding for the entire education continuum. The investments Arizona makes not just in K-12 education but also in early learning and higher education will contribute to the vitality and prosperity of our families, our communities, and the future of Arizona.
