Scholars Night 2015 with the Arizona Diamondbacks!

August 5th, 2015

2015 Helios, D-backs, and College Success Arizona Scholars Enjoy a Night at the Ballpark to Celebrate our Fourth Year of $1,000,000 Scholarship Program

It’s a day that College Success Arizona scholars who are part of the $1,000,000 scholarship program funded by Helios Education Foundation and the Arizona Diamondbacks look forward to and then remember for the rest of their lives.  Along with their families and friends, eight new D-backs scholars enjoyed a great night at the July 19th, D-backs versus Giants baseball game to celebrate their inclusion into this special program.

dbacksderrickWhen a student earns a scholarship, they typically receive money to pay for education. When a College Success Arizona scholar is also named a D-backs scholar, they join a family rooted in baseball. Now in the 4th year of the program, the D-backs, along with Helios Education Foundation, have so far awarded through College Success Arizona, more than $480,000 to 32 hardworking Arizona students attending colleges and universities across Arizona.  All students receiving scholarships have high financial need and high potential to succeed in earning their college degrees.

Along with the funding and tremendous support from the D-backs, the students also receive valuable Success Services, including intensive professional mentoring, career development assistance, and numerous academic advisory services through College Success Arizona. These vital support services are also funded through the scholarship partnership, and greatly increase the scholars’ chances of graduating on time with a degree.

dbacksfamilyThe D-backs commitment to each student is displayed not only through the money they award, but also through the relationships they maintain.   “We have a great connection with our scholars. We always keep in touch with them,” said Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall during their 2015 scholarship awarding ceremony. Students often build long-term relationships with the team and are able to take advantage of the great networking opportunities that accompany that relationship.  Debbie Castaldo, Vice President of Corporate and Community Impact, gave a heartfelt welcome to the students, telling them that they were now part of the D-backs family, as she said in both English and Spanish, “Bienvenidos a nuestra familia. Como parte de la familia D-backs, le ayudaremos en todo lo possible para tener exito. Or, welcome to our family. As part of the D-backs family, we will help you as much as possible to be successful.”

On the special Sunday evening at the ballpark, family and friends gathered to honor the eight new scholars as they proudly accepted their awards. The day was filled with excitement as most of the students had never attended a Major League Baseball game, much less one where to their surprise, they received on field recognition.  Each scholar was also presented a custom made D-backs jersey, laptop and bike. To top off the evening the D-backs also invited the students to come back to D-backs games throughout the season, as their guests.

dbacks2College Success Arizona president and CEO, Rich Nickel, had this to say about the program, “We are proud to be partners with Helios Education Foundation and the Arizona D-backs baseball club in this innovative scholarship and success program.  This program is a great example of how the community can come together to impact the lives of high-need Arizona students that must become a larger part of the higher education landscape and eventually the skilled workforce here in Arizona.”

As the picture shows, the scholars, their friends and family, and the staff from College Success Arizona, Helios, and the D-backs all had a great time at the ballgame!  To find out more about College Success Arizona and support their scholarship and mentoring programs for Arizona students, please go to www.collegesuccessarizona.org and use the online donation option, or call 602-636-1850.
