Black History Month Celebrated on College Campuses Across Arizona

Black History MonthBlack History Month is being celebrated on college campuses in Arizona and around the nation.

Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe has several events scheduled throughout February including the “Still I Rise” Mural Project. It involves students helping to paint a depiction of resilience, social justice and activism. Meanwhile, “Movement 101: A Primer on Civic Engagement” features a panel of local, national, and international leaders who have worked in causes and movements such as the drive for an MLK Day in Phoenix, racial profiling, Black Lives Matter, and 1950s school desegregation.  Click here for a list of ASU’s 2016 events.

The University of Arizona (UA) in Tucson is celebrating Black History Month with poetry readings from several award winning poets at the U of A Poetry Center. Also, the Africana Studies Program is hosting the “The Human Rights: Borders and Barriers Symposium.” It features scholars and community members discussing terrorism, war, human rights, and migration flows in the U.S., Europe and Africa.  See a list of U of A’s events

Alain-Phillipe Durand, the Africana Studies Program director says increasing violence around the world is cause to have a better understanding of people, “More than ever, looking at recent events, one can see the critical importance of the studying and understanding of the human’s soul, spirit, emotions and the promoting of diversity and intercultural competence on the widest global scale.”

Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff is celebrating Black History Month with several lectures, a Mardi Gras dance and a gospel concert. The events are presented by Inclusion and Multicultural Services, Ethnic Studies, and the Black Student Union.  Here are NAU’s events.

Black History Month is an annual celebration for achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the important role of African Americans in U.S. history. Each president since 1976 has designated the month of February as Black History Month. Canada and the United Kingdom also devote a month to celebrating black history.
